The Virgin Islands were hit by the Hurricane Irma and Mary, causing great damage to the surrounding buildings and saline surfaces on the island.
According to a journalist who arrived the day after the storm, the island of St. Thomas resembled a military zone.
Today, retailers from Main Street and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, near the cruise ship port, says they are ready for their return. The surface around the port is also restored.
The port itself is almost undamaged. According to a statement by West Indian Company CEO Clifford Graham, the port has lost only the protective fence and lighting, but it has been restored today.
The cruisers carry 1.6 million visitors a year on Virgin Islands!
St. Maarten, a stalwart of Caribbean cruising, is the most recent in a string of Eastern Caribbean cruise ports to reopen to ship calls.
St. Thomas welcomed passengers on November 10 and San Juan reopened as a port of call on November 30 .
St. Thomas has two cruise ports: The Crown Bay and West India Company Dock.
Both are located on the south side of the island which is not far from Charlotte Amalie.
Generally, the ships of Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises,Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean (except Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas) dock at Havensight.
Princess, Cunard, Holland America and Oasis and Allure typically dock at Crown Bay.
This can change depending on the number of ships in port. Deeper draft ships such as Queen Mary 2, Oasis and Allure are required to dock at Crown Bay.
