The presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, today briefly discussed the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit – “APEC” in Vietnam, and confirmed a joint statement on Syria.
It is said that there is no military solution to the conflict in Syria and that the two presidents have agreed that the final political solution to the war in Syria should be within the framework of the Geneva process and in line with the UN Security Council resolution, number 2254.
Tass says that the joint statement has agreed the continued use of existing military communication channels to ensure the safety of US and Russian troops, as well as to prevent serious incidents with friendly forces fighting ISIS.
The statement also says that the presidents confirm that efforts will continue in the fight against ISIS, in order to reach a final victory over this terrorist organization.
It is said that this document was written by experts from both countries, and that Trump and Putin were confirmed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tilerson.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Syrian statement was prepared specifically for the APEC leaders’ meeting in Da Nang.
Tass says that before that, Putin and Trump had a short conversation while heading to the venue for photographing the summit participants.
